What’s In a Name … The Anatomy of a great Brand !

In a world and times where a company named after the founders favorite fruit is the most valued , brand name is no longer a legal formality it is the story the thought and in most cases the initial idea behind a very successful business .

Lets look at a few examples :

Amazon was coined after the Amazon river because Jeff Bezo’s wanted his company to be the earth’s largest bookstore just like Amazon which is the earths largest river . He has over the years used the same philosophy in turning his company into the Worlds largest Everything Store .

Starbucks was named after the character Starbuck in Moby Dick because the founders thought the name evoked the romance of high seas and reminded of early coffee traders , on the other hand FMCG Giant Pepsi was named after the digestive enzyme pepsin .

Closer to home Online fashion retailer Jabong was named after a tree in line with its youthful image , and flipkart was named so , since as a word it didn’t mean anything ,it had an available .com also it had an implied meaning referring to shopping ‘cart’.

Need more convincing ?? Well here you go ?

Have you heard of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta ? Wait , what ? who ? let me rephrase .. Have you heard of Lady Gaga ? Yes you have .

How about Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor .. I don’t think so ,but you have heard of Lorde’ of the famous single ‘royal’ fame . Famous Designer Ralph Lauren changed his from Ralph Lifshitz , coz he was tired of people mispronouncing it .

So why is it that companies and Celebrities spend so much time and money on creating these iconic Brand names ?

Lets break it down then :

According to the American marketing Association A brand is a “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller’s good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”

So what constitutes a good name? Simply put It’s a mix of a great story , a incredible business idea , and of cors your personality .

Why all this , if u want to know ? Don’t you want to share and inspire the world about how and where did the big idea came from ? Imagine how dull it would be if u were to say “it came from a Thesaurus, coz I didn’t want to think any more.” Your brand becomes your calling card and your company emulates your values in every aspect of its interaction , whether its Social , Internal or Media . Your brand becomes an extension of who you are . So I hope this was convincing enough for you to put away the dictionary , move away from the thesaurus and stop trying to find it on Google for a bit . When it comes to brand names take some time and create the next big one !
